At the self-checkout, I absentmindedly left my receipt behind. A woman hurried over, handing it to me with a gentle smile. “You dropped this,” she said softly. I thanked her and walked out, not giving it another thought.
But later at home, as I unpacked groceries, something caught my eye. On the back of the receipt, in rushed handwriting, were the chilling words: “Check your car trunk.” My pulse quickened. For a moment, I just stared, unsure if it was a joke or a warning. Finally, I grabbed my phone and a flashlight and stepped outside.
With shaky hands, I lifted the trunk. Tucked between my grocery bags was a black backpack I had never seen before. My chest tightened, panic flooding me. I didn’t dare touch it. Instead, I stepped back and called the police. Within minutes, officers arrived and carefully opened the bag.
Inside was stolen jewelry and IDs belonging to strangers. The officer explained that thieves had been hiding stolen goods in shoppers’ cars in public lots, later retrieving them when no one was watching. That mysterious woman must have seen someone slip the bag into my trunk—and used the receipt to warn me without drawing attention.
Her quick thinking helped police track the theft ring and return the stolen items to their owners. I never saw her again, but I’ll never forget her quiet act of bravery. Now, every time I shop, I’m more alert. And yes—I always check the back of my receipts.
