Sometimes Dealbreakers Aren’t What They Seem

I met a guy on a dating app, and to my surprise, we really hit it off during our chats. We had similar humor, good conversations, and he seemed genuine. After weeks of texting, we decided to finally meet in person. When the day came, I was excited but also nervous.

The moment I saw him, he looked exactly like his pictures—friendly smile, nice outfit, and polite manner. But almost immediately, I noticed something that caught me off guard: his scent was overwhelming. I couldn’t tell if it was cologne, body spray, or even shampoo, but it was so strong that it made it hard for me to focus.

I kept trying to push the thought aside because everything else about him was pleasant. We laughed, shared stories, and genuinely enjoyed each other’s company. Still, the smell lingered in the back of my mind, almost distracting me from the conversation.By the end of the evening, I decided to be honest.

I didn’t want to embarrass him, so I gently asked, “Hey, I’ve been meaning to ask—what cologne are you wearing? It’s really strong.”

He chuckled a little and admitted, “Oh wow, is it too much? I probably overdid it.

I always worry that I don’t smell fresh enough, so I put on extra. Guess I went overboard.”In that moment, my perspective shifted. What I saw as a dealbreaker was really just someone trying too hard to make a good impression.

It wasn’t about neglect or lack of effort—it was the opposite. He cared enough to want to show up his best, even if it came across the wrong way.We ended the night on a good note. While I wasn’t sure if romance was in our future, I did learn something important: sometimes what seems like a flaw is just a sign of someone’s nervousness or good intentions. And that small realization stayed with me—reminding me to look a little deeper before making quick judgments.
