Why Your Bathtub Could Be the Safest Spot for Your Bags

It happened to me once—I checked into a cozy hotel after a long day of traveling. I unpacked near the bed, arranging my clothes and essentials, and then decided to read some reviews. That’s when my eyes landed on the dreaded word: bedbugs. My heart sank immediately. I couldn’t stop picturing tiny pests crawling into my suitcase and following me home. Panic set in, and I realized I needed a strategy to protect my belongings. That’s when I discovered a surprisingly simple yet effective trick: place your luggage in the hotel room’s bathtub.

At first, it sounded unusual, even a little silly. But the reasoning is solid. Bedbugs hide in mattresses, headboards, and curtains, and they are naturally drawn to fabric. This makes your suitcase an ideal hiding spot. The good news is that bedbugs avoid smooth, cold surfaces—exactly what a bathtub provides. Placing your luggage there immediately upon entering the room creates a secure zone while you inspect the rest of the space.

Even if bedbugs aren’t a concern, the bathtub offers multiple benefits. Hotel carpets and floors, despite looking clean, often harbor dirt, crumbs, and bacteria. Bathrooms, in contrast, are usually scrubbed thoroughly, making the tub one of the cleanest surfaces in the room. It also protects your belongings from accidental spills, leaky toiletries, or curious children who might knock over your suitcase.

Here’s my personal routine: first, I place my luggage in the bathtub. Next, I inspect the bed, mattress seams, curtains, and headboard for signs of pests, then check nearby furniture and corners for unusual stains. Once confident the room is clean, I leave my bags in the tub or transfer them to a luggage rack. This simple habit provides peace of mind, keeps your belongings safe, and lets you enjoy your stay without worry.
