I Didn’t Expect This After My Ex Handed Me Eggs and Bologna

Breakups are messy—but mine came with cold cuts and public humiliation.A week after I finally cut ties with my ex, Alex, he showed up at my door holding a grocery bag like it was a peace offering. Inside were a dozen eggs and half a pound of bologna. No note. No apology. Just an awkward, “Thought you could use this.”

I took the bag just to end the moment. Later, I tossed the bologna and made an omelet. End of story—or so I thought. That afternoon, I ran into a mutual friend who casually dropped a bomb: Alex had been telling people he “bought me groceries” because I was struggling to eat without him. According to him, those few dollars’ worth of food were proof that I couldn’t survive on my own.

He even claimed I looked “so thankful,” like he’d rescued me.Let’s be clear—I didn’t ask for help. I wasn’t struggling. And I certainly wasn’t saved by a man whose idea of generosity was bargain deli meat.

So I sent him a simple message:
“Keep the bologna.”
Because sometimes the only thing an ex brings into your life isn’t closure, support, or growth—it’s exactly what he handed over.
Full of bologna.
