A 8-Year-Old Girl Calls 911 and Says, ‘It Was My Dad and His Friend… Please

The scene outside was quiet, almost serene, with children’s laughter echoing from a nearby park, a stark contrast to the gravity of the situation unfolding. Officer José López, a veteran with a gentle demeanor, approached the modest one-story house on Maple Street with a sense of urgency. He had been briefed on the way over by Vanessa and knew the situation might involve a medical emergency or something more sinister.

As he walked up the pathway, he noted the overgrown garden, the faded paint on the wooden panels, and the quiet that seemed to envelop the house. Gently, he knocked on the door, his heart heavy with concern for the little girl who had reached out for help.

Inside, Liliana, clutching the phone to her ear, was filled with a mix of fear and relief. She had never spoken to a police officer before, and the situation felt surreal. But Vanessa’s calm voice reassured her, and hearing the knock, she hurried to open the door, trusting that help had finally arrived.

When Officer López saw Liliana, her small frame silhouetted against the doorway, he was struck by the sight. Her eyes were wide with distress, her little hands trembling slightly. But most noticeable was her distended stomach, which seemed out of place on such a petite figure. He immediately called for paramedics while kneeling to meet her eye level.

“Hi, Liliana,” he said softly, offering a warm smile. “I’m Officer López, and I’m here to help you. Can you tell me where it hurts?”

Liliana nodded, pointing to her stomach. “It’s so big,” she whispered, eyes welling with tears. “And it hurts all the time.”

Officer López gently led her to the couch and asked her more questions, all the while keeping Vanessa on the line. The dispatcher had already alerted child protective services, sensing this was more than a medical issue.

As the paramedics arrived and began to assess Liliana, her mother stirred in the adjacent room. It quickly became apparent that the mother was suffering from a medical condition herself, possibly an autoimmune disease, leaving Liliana often unattended and reliant on her father and his friend for care.

The truth unfolded like a tragic play. Liliana’s father and his friend, in an attempt to save money, had been diluting nutritional supplements in place of proper meals, not understanding the growing needs of a child. This had led to severe malnutrition, causing her stomach to distend painfully. They had not intended harm, but their ignorance and negligence had dire consequences.

As Liliana was taken to the hospital, Officer López stayed with her, promising he wouldn’t leave until she was safe and sound. Vanessa, still on the line, whispered words of encouragement, tears in her eyes, overwhelmed by the innocence of a child who had to endure so much pain.

The community rallied around Liliana and her mother, offering support and ensuring they received the care they needed. It was a wake-up call for many, a reminder of the unseen struggles that can exist behind closed doors. The story of Liliana brought tears to the eyes of many, but it also kindled a spark of compassion and a drive to ensure that no child would have to make such a call again.
